The former fishermen settlement of Plakias is situated about 30km south of Rethymno at the Libyan sea, in a crescent moon shaped bay. Plakias and surroundings are well known for the serenity, the stunning nature and the crystal clear sea. Even in high season when all hotels and apartments are full it never feels overcrowded. The reason for this unique feeling is the people spread out over the many beautiful beaches or are walking in the midst of olive fields, along the rugged shoreline, in the surrounding mountains or through one of the nearby gorges. Plakias is an ideal holiday destination for both a relaxing and an active holiday.
Some of the famous landmarks are the Preveli Monastery , the Preveli Palm Forest, Kotsifou Gorge and Kourtaliotis Gorge. For all the landmarks in the immediate surroundings click on the button in the menu above.
Enjoy the breath taking sunset over the "Dragon", a dragon shaped rock formation at the west end of Plakias Bay before enjoying the famous Cretan cuisine in one of the many tavernas. After dinner you can go for a drink, a dance or both in one of the bars. There is often live music and if you are a sports fan you won't miss your favourite team or sport because most bars have big screen TV's. Don't forget to have a taste of raki, the local Cretan alcoholic drink!
Plakias is also a perfect starting point for some great walks in the surroundings and for many memorable day trips on this magical island, you will find tips on many of them in the menu above.
