Plakias is situated in a crescent moon shaped bay, about 30km south of Rethymno at the Libyan Sea. Plakias and surroundings are well known for the serenity, the breath-taking nature and the crystal-clear sea.
Even in high season when all hotels and apartments are full it never really feels overcrowded. One of the reasons for this unique feeling is the large number of beautiful beaches in the immediate surroundings. Other reasons are the big variety of walks in the midst of olive fields, along the rugged shoreline, in the surrounding mountains or through one of the nearby gorges and the great diversity of possible daytrips from Plakias.
There are many both historical and natural landmarks around Plakias. The most famous ones are the Preveli Palm Forest, the Preveli Monastery, the imposing Kourtaliotis Gorge with its waterfalls and the steep cliff at the end of Plakias beach. Click on the "surroundings" button to see all the landmarks with information on the location, opening times and entrance fees when applicable.
Enjoy the breath-taking sunset over the "Dragon", a dragon shaped rock formation at the west end of Plakias Bay before enjoying the famous Cretan cuisine in one of the many tavernas. After dinner you can go for a drink, a dance or both in one of the bars. There is often live music and if you are a sports fan, you won't miss out on your favourite team or sport because most bars have big screen TV's. Don't forget to have a taste of Raki, the famous local spirit!
Plakias is also a perfect starting point for some great walks in the surroundings, a variety of boat trips from the pier and for many memorable daytrips on this magical island. You will find most of them in the menu above.
