Finikas Monastery
This charming, small monastery is located 4km north west of Plakias in beautiful surroundings with spectacular views towards Souda Beach, the mountain village of Sellia and over the Libyan Sea.
The official name of the monastery is "The Holy Monastery of the Archangel Michael" and was built in the 18th century. The monastery was in ruins but was fully restored in the last 5 years, and the best thing is they didn't completely rebuild the walls but used the old ruined walls as a base.
In the monastery you will find 2 small folklore museums and 1 small religious museum. The nuns who inhabit the monastery love to show you around.
In front of the monastery, there is a chapel in a small courtyard.
The word Finikas (Phoinikas) was the name of a small coastal settlement already mentioned in the 1st century BC. The inhabitants moved to Sellia in the beginning of the 20th century but you can still see the ruins of houses in the surroundings of the monastery.
You can walk there from Plakias using the beautiful walk 5.
By car you drive from Plakias to Sellia and then west towards Rodakino and before you go over the mountains you take a left turn off the main road, following the sign to the monastery and after 1km you are there.
