Heraklion & Knossos
Heraklion is the capital of Crete and has done a lot of work in recent years to keep up with the more charismatic cities of Chania and Rethymno, and it shows. The most interesting area is around the old Venetian Harbour with the beautiful Koules Fortress and the old centre south of it. Another recommendation is a walk along the old defensive walls.
Heraklion houses a lot of museums like the Archaeological Museum, the National History Museum, the Historical Museum of Crete and of course the famous open-air museum of Knossos, one of the Minoan Palaces on Crete.
